MILITARY SERVICE
Sir, —An article, under the caption “Men for Armed Forces” in the Southland Times of May 2 states: “The last of the cases of grade I men held on appeal will be reviewed by the Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board at a sitting in Invercargill today.” This is riot so. In one of Southland’s essential industries quite a number of grade I men who are also in category A are still held on appeal. Some of these men, who are eager and anxious to serve in the armed forces, have up to the present been prevented from doing so because their appeals have not yet gone before the appeal boards. Despite the rapidly changing war situation in Europe, the War Cabinet is pledged to maintain the New Zealand Division at full fighting strength. Is it because we who are working in an essential industry are now going to be denied the opportunity of serving overseas? Perhaps the Manpower Officer, Mr Peterson, can give some information on this point. STUMP.
[When this letter was referred to the district manpower officer, Mr A. J. Peterson, he said he had no comment to make.]
