BOOM IN NATIONAL SAVINGS

VICTORY LOAN IMPETUS Hie 1945 Victory Loan has given a big impetus to national war savings in Southland, no doubt because these savings will count towards Southland’s quota of the loan. The total amount in national savings deposits received in the province last week was £6780, or more than double the weekly quota of £3194. Invercargill had £3145 in deposits against its weekly quota of £1687. Thus the city nearly doubled its quota, but there were other centres in tile ‘ province which comparatively, did much better than this. For example, Nightcaps, with a quota of £5O, received £435 in national savings deposits, and Riversdale, with a quota of £29, raised £702. Other good results were:—Gore, £905 (quota £430); Lumsden, £335 (£43), Mataura, £254 (£96); Otautau, £154 (£83); Thombury, £176 (£21); Tuatapere, £229 (£65). Over £20,000 has been subscribed to the loan in Southland through national savings deposits since April 1. Invercargill has made a good start with national savings this week, £540 having been deposited yesterday.
