THEATRES TO OPEN ON V DAY

Desire Of Government (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 7. ' The picture theatres will be open on V Day. The Dominion executive of the New Zealand Motion Picture Exhibitors’ Association received a letter from the acting Prime Minister, Mr Nash, indicating that the Government would like the theatres to be open, and, after making contact with the operators’ union, decided, with the latters cooperation, to screen as usual. . It was also decided to recommend all exhibitors to put their gross box office returns into the Victory Loan. This, it is understood, has been agreed to by the major groups of exhibitors. JURIES IN AUCKLAND Release To Take Part In Celebrations (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 7. In the event of an announcement of peace in Europe this week the jurymen and one jury woman who were sworn in at the Supreme Court this morning will be released at once to take part in the celebrations, with the exception of those jurymen engaged in a murder trial. This was announced by Mr Justice Callan when the jurymen were , sworn in for trials to be heard during the week. He said that with the one exception mentioned the trials proceeding at the time of the peace announcement would be interrupted to enable tire jurymen to take part in the national thanksgiving. Later, to the jury empanelled to hear the case of the King v. Aperahama Orikena, charged with having murdered his wife at Mangamuku, North Auckland, the judge said that the judges in New Zealand had conferred on the matter of procedure in the event of peace celebrations. It had been determined for good reasons that the courts would not sit except for the purpose of finishing the murder trial. Further, said the judge, the court would sit unusually long hours in. the hope that this would enable the jury to carry out its solemn duty in time to take part in the peace celebrations.
