SIX PERSONS INJURED (P.A.) GISBORNE, May 7. Struck by a truck while they were walking on the main south road near Matawhero Hill, six persons were injured, five being admitted to hospital. The injured were: — Audrey Burston, aged. 18, of'Matawhero; severe head injuries. Marie < Grayson, aged 14, of Matawhero; severe head injuries. Lucy Moore, aged 15, of Bushmere; injuries to body and head. Kenneth Goodall, aged 23, of Bushmere road; injuries to legs. Mrs Ada Mavis Goodall, aged 42, of Bushmere; abrasions and cuts. A party of seven were walking along the main road to the Makaraka-Mata-whero hall. About 250 yards from the hall a heavy motor truck driven by George Phillip Whyte, overtook the pedestrians, and, because of the bright lights of vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, Whyte failed to see them. » Mr Goodall had only recently returned from overseas service with the army. Since his return he had been undergoing treatment at the Rotorua Hospital for severe wounds received, and he was discharged only last week.
