R.A.F. FIGHTERS IDLE
Attacks End Against Enemy In ’ North
(8.0.W.) RUGBY, May 6. After five days of the most concentrated effort ever packed into so short a time, Typhoons, Spitfires and Tempests stood idle on their airfields on Saturday. There were no more targets for them to attack. However, this does not necessarily mean that the work of the 2nd Tactical Air Force is finished. In the last five days of concentrated attacks on the trapped Germans in north-western Germany, the Royal Air Force destroyed 4900 motor transports and destroyed or damaged more than 100 German aircraft, as well as knocking out 200 more on the ground. Well over 200 ships, ranging from fishing smacks to ocean-going liners, attempting to escape to Norway, were immobilized. Never had rocket-firing aircraft been used with greater success against shipking. One 10,000-ton cargo vessel was left burning after eight rocket strikes. The last strike against shipping was made by an Australian pilot who dropped 5001 b bombs on a 500-ton ship and saw it explode.
