CONGRATULATIONS TO MONTGOMERY

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 7. The Army Council has sent the following message of congratulations to Field-Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery. “The Army Council congratulates you and all ranks of the 21st Army Group on the magnificent success achieved. The capitulation marks the conclusion not only of a brilliant campaign of the last 11 months, but also of the long years of preparation between the withdrawals of our armies from north-west Europe, when the British people were left to uphold alone the cause of freedom, and the day of your triumphant return. “In company with our great Allies, you have liberated the territory of our friends, confounded the armed might of the enemy and freed the people of this country from a terrible ordeal and the threat of one still worse. To your unerring leadership and to the skill and courage of your soldiers the gratitude of the nation is due.” J •
