INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

Successful Bring And Buy Fair A successful bring-and-buy fair was held at the Intermediate School on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Home and School Association. A large number of parents, friends and children were present. Seasonal produce was in good supply and the funds of the association were swelled by a substantial sum. In a short speech before the opening Mr H. K. Slocombe, president of the association, stated that as the school was a new one, much was needed in the way of ground improvement, and the association had set out to raise £250 for this purpose. It was hoped within the next year or two to plant ornamental shrubs and trees, and to lay out flower beds. Last-year, of money raised £lOO was donated to the school library and £5O towards the proposed school swimming pool. He mentioned that the raising of money was not the association’s main object: it was to form a link between the parents and the school, and with this end in view an evening was held at the school once a month, when selected speakers gave talks on educational and other subjects of interest. These were followed by a social evening. The membership of the association this year to date was nearly 400. Mr Slocombe thanked .all those who had helped the bring-and-buy fair by donations of goods and produce and in the work of preparation. He particularly mentioned Mr L. J. Broomfield, principal of the school, and his staff. Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., patron of the Home and School Association, formally declared the function open, and congratulated the school on the interest shown by the parents. He briefly addressed the children, taking the opportunity to stress the necessity for the conservation of native bush and the protection of native birds. A shoulder spray was presented to Mrs Denham by a pupil of the school. The Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, also addressed the gathering.
