£3OO C® ; for every Woman Aa if and r, i Child in New Zealand That is the money-cost of New Zealand’s war effort to date—£3oo per head of population. If the bill 8 was divided up equally and presented just like the grocer’s bill that is the approximate amount that you and every member of your household would be asked to pay. Of course the bill could not be presented like that—to pay for the war in that way would be impossible. How then is payment made? It works like this. Of the total war cost from 1939 to 1945, amounting to over £500,000,000, we have endeavoured to pay as much as possible out of taxation. Everyone has contributed something in taxes, each according to his means. The remainder of our war cost is met by loans*. It’s something of which to be proud, isn’t it, that a small country like New Zealand has voluntarily raised some £200,000,000 in War Loans since 1939. Taxation or loans; these are the only ways by which we can ik safely pay for the war. A Soon you’ll be asked to lend again—to the 1945 Victory Loan. I ■ It’s time now to plan how much you’ll lend. In this yea? \ of Victory, 1945, promise to make a substantial contribution. *WHAT ARE LOANS SPENT ON:_ In 1943/44 major items were— Pay and allowances £43,700,000 Accommodation, food and clothing 7,200,000 War Stores 52,000,000 Medical Supplies 700,000 Transport ' 5,900,000 Land and Buildings 7,000,000 Rehabilitation from War Expenses A/c only SOO.OOO Reverse Lend Lease' 24,400,000 £141,400,000 The 1945 Victory Lban opens on May !4th.
