Mr J. D. Campbell, who has been attending a Dominion executive meeting of the Red Cross Society in Wellington, will return by this evening’s express. Mr R. J. Kerridge, of Kerridge Theatres, Auckland, visited Gore and Invercargill over the weekend. Sergeant G. R. Blampied, son of Mrs E. M. Blampied, 287 Tweed street, who returned from the Middle East with the last furlough draft and was detained in Christchurch Hospital for treatment of an injury to his leg, arrived in Invercargill by Saturday evening’s express and is now a patient in the Southland Hospital, Kew.

The resignation of Mr J. D. Gilmore from the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee was received with regret at a meeting of the committee last night. A letter of appreciation will be sent to him.

At the annual meeting of the Invercargill Orphans’ Club reference was made to the deaths of three members, Dr Stanley Brown, Mr T. J. Boyce and Mr G. J. Reed, and those present stood for a moment in silence as a mark of respect. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association at Wellington:—President, Mr C. C. Davis; vice-president, Mr H. Morpeth; executive, Messrs F. Winstone, F. BrookeTaylor, G. L. Cross, W. Carson, J. S. Jack, H. D. Vickery and A. Hayward.

An invitation to visit Invercargill to address a meeting of trades unionists is to be sent to Mr Frank Allerby, of Wellington, who represented the workers of New Zealand at the last conference of the International Labour Organization at Philadelphia. This was decided at a meeting of the Southland Trades Council on Saturday night? Guests at the Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs D. Harrisori’ (Petone), Mrs G. Wilson and D. Agnew (Dunedin).
