RIGHT HAND RULE

REMIT TO CONFERENCE OF MOTOR UNION

Among the remits which will be discussed at the half-yearly conference of the South Island Motor Union at Christchurch on Friday will be one from the Automobile Association (Cdn-. terbury) on the right hand rule. This' remit was discussed at a meeting of the general committee of the Automobile Association (Southland) last night, when it was decided to put forward an amendment.

The Canterbury remit is as follows: “That the original rule known as the right hand rule at intersections should be restored so as to make it absolute in all cases and that the recent amendment under which the car on the right loses the right of way if it is turning to the right be rescinded.” The chariman (Mr S. C. K. Smith) said that he had discussed the remit with Mr D. J. Wesney and Mr M. M. Macdonald and they were of the opinion that an amendment should go forward. They thought that if the amendment which had been drawn up should come into force it would solve the problem of the right-hand rule. Following is the amendment which will be submitted:—“That the original right hand rule at intersections should be restored to the extent of giving the right-of-way to all traffic approaching from another road on the right, whether such traffic is going straight across or turning, but that this should not apply to traffic approaching from opposite directions or approximately parallel courses and turning; in the latter case the through traffic should have the right-of-way and the vehicle approaching , from the opposite direction and turning to enter or cross the other stream should give way.”
