THE BATTLES OF GERMANY: The Allies in the west are driving deep into Germany along the lines indicated by the arrows. In the east the Russians may develop their final blow along the lines shown. From the Rhine the Allies struck against the Ruhr (1) and from this came the enveloping movements from Wesel and below Cologne (2). The deep penetrations (3) have already taken the Allies to the gates of Bremen and Hanover. The drive up the Ems to Bremen is making swift progress. Kassel has fallen. The arrows (4) show the general direction of the southern drives towards Gotha and beyond, and towards Nuremberg. When the Russians storm the central Oder (1), they may follow with enveloping moves (2) from the north and south. With the Germans drawn to the defence of Berlin the way would be open for the deep penetrations (3).
