Late News XANTHEN CAPTURED

(Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 9. The town of Xanthen in the centre of the German pocket on the west bank of the Rhine opposite Wesel has been captured after a bloody and desperate battle. The Germans are subjecting the area to a heavy bombardment from the east bank. s The American bridgehead across the Rhine is being steadily expanded and more troops and supplies have crossed the river. ALLIES IN CENTRE OF MANDALAY (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 9. Allied forces have fought their way into the centre of Mandalay. Fighting is now going on near Government House, at the north wall of Fort Dufferin.
