PRODUCTION OF TANKS IN AUSTRALIA
Project Cancelled Before Completion
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 9.
The Federal Government has spent approximately £7,500,000 on the development of an Australian tank, stated the Minister for Munitions, Senator D. Cameron, in answer to a question. He said the actual figures would be substantially reduced if capital assets , since diverted to other production were offset. Fiftyfive tanks were nearly completed when the Army Department advised that the project was to cease. As none of the tanks were completed, none went into action. The tank programme began in 1941.
