DEATH OF MRS FRASER

MANY MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 9. Hundreds of messages were received again today by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, conveying sympathy to him in the death of his wife, Mrs Janet Fraser, whose funeral will take place tomorrow. More than 700 arrived at this office in Parliament Buildings during the day, making a total so far of close on 1800 messages.

Messages arriving today included cables from President Roosevelt and Mrs Roosevelt, the American acting Secretary of State, Mr J. C. Grew, the Governor-General of Canada, the Earl of Athlone, and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, the Governor-General of Australia, the Duke of Gloucester, and the Duchess of Gloucester, the British Ambassador in Washington, Lord Halifax, and Lady Halifax, the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr John Curtin, and Mrs Curtin, the Com-mander-in-Chief of the British Pacific Fleet, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser, Admiral of the Fleet Lord Keyes, the Secretary of State for India, Mr L. S. Amery, the Governor of Victoria, Major-General Sir Winston Dugan, and Lady Dugan, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr W. J. McKell, the Premier of Victoria, Mr A. A. Dunstan, Provost Mackenzie and the citizens of Inverness and LieutenantGeneral Sir Bernard Freyberg, on behalf of all ranks of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Mediterranean theatre of war. Wreaths received today at Parliament Buildings were placed on display in the social hall. There were nearly 300 wreaths from citizens’ organizations in all parts of the Dominion, with others arriving at frequent intervals. One of the first to be received was a posy from two old-age pensioners. Many citizens took the opportunity today to pay tribute to the memory of Mrs Fraser by filing past the casket in St. John’s Church. A guard of honour was posted round the casket, the guard comprising representatives of the W.W.S.A., W.A.A.C., W.A.A.F. and W.R.N.Z.N.S.

Members of the Southland County Council at their meeting yesterday stood in silence as a mark of respect to the mejnory of Mrs Fraser. It was decided to send a message of condolence to the Prime Minister.
