DERBY WINNER’S LINES
SAME TAP-ROOT AS
SIMPER
By
HAMPTON
An English writer’s comment on the blood lines of the last English Derby winner, Ocean Swell, is of considerable
importance and great interest in Southland, where this female line is well known. Ocean Swell descends from the same tap-root as Simper, one of the greatest brood mares we have had in New Zealand, and whose blood is common in Southland at the present day. Ocean Swell was sired by Blue Peter (also a Derby winner) from Jiffy, by Hurry On from Juniata, by Junior out of Samphire. Samphire was by Isinglass out of the famous Chelandry (grand-dam of Simper), a daughter of Illuminata and. grand-daughter of Paraffin. “This is the seemingly immortal No. 1 family,” comments the English writer. “In tail-male, the winner traces back through Cyllene, Bona Vista, Bend Or, to Stockwell and Doncaster. It is good, hard breeding right through, and if there are purists who turn up their noses at some of the intermediates, I don’t think anybody will mind very much.”
Simper, who was got by Symington from Chelys, a daughter of Chelandry, was foaled in England in 1912 and imported to New Zealand by Mr J. B. Reid, and later purchased by Mr W. T. Hazlett, Simper was a four-year-old when she produced her first foal, a colt by Kilbroney, known later as Affectation. Chelandry was the dam of six winners of £42,675 and is ancestress of Wrack (sire of winners of over £500,000 in America), Heroic (leading sire in Australia for seven seasons), Saucy Sue (winner of the Oaks and £25,284 in stakes), Magpie and numerous others. Illuminata was the dam of eight winners of £44,476 in stakes. Sufficient is known of the deeds of Simper at the stud, but it is of considerable interest that this famous line should be such a force in England as well as in New Zealand.
