R.N.Z.A.F. STATION CLOSED DOWN

AIR UNITS LEAVE RONGOTAI (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 13. Rongotai has closed down as a Royal New Zealand Air Force station, it was announced tonight. A start on transferring units from the station to the Royal New Zealand Air Force accommodation camp at Anderson Park, Wellington, was made on Saturday, and now the only important unit remaining at Rongotai is the No. 42 Transport Squadron. Perhaps the greatest contribution Rongotai made to the war effort of New Zealand was the fact that almost from its inception it housed the Royal New Zealand Air Force training schools. Subsequently those schools moved to Nelson, but hundreds of fully qualified technicians who have proved their capabilities on active service received their training at Rongotai.

The closing of Rongotai has caused a large influx of personnel into the Royal New Zealand Air Force accommodation camp at Anderson Park. A number of important Royal New Zealand Air Force units were housed at Rongotai, including the non-effective pool of officers, non-commissioned officers and airmen, the station hospital, the sick and wounded section, the movements by rail and shipping sections and the band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The Central Trade Test Board will continue to be accommodated at Rongotai.
