POLICE ARREST 77 MEN IN RAID

Charges Under Gaming Act

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 6. Seventy-seven arrests were made when the Auckland police staged one of the biggest raids for some years last evening. Detectives and plain clothes constables went to a three-storey building in Durham street, one party entering by the front door and the second party climbing over the roof and gaining entry by breaking the windows on the first floor. Games were in progress when the police made their surprise entry. At a special sitting of the Magistrate’s Court held at the Police Station at 1 o’clock this looming Larry Lasher was charged with using the premises as a common gaming-house, David Henry Simon was charged with assisting in conducting the house and 75 men were charged with being found on the premises. All were remanded until Monday.
