Sporting HEAVY TRACK AT WINGATUI

Totalizator Decrease Of £20,651 LOYAL LADY IN FORM

(Special) DUNEDIN, January 6. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held in wretched weather at Wingatui today. The track was very heavy, and in places there were sheets of water across it, while drizzling rain fell for the greater part'of the day. It was not surprising that form calculations were upset, but horses capable of handling heavy going were soon found and no fewer than four favourites won. Both the gate receipts and totalizator turnover shower substantial decreases. The gate returns amounted .to £529/13/-, compared with £941/12/6 for the same day last year. The totalizator turnover showed a drop of £20,651/10/-; Saturday’s figures amounting to £34,490/10/- against £55,142 last year. In spite of the conditions the racing was always full of interest. Scratchings considerably reduced some of the fields, but several of them were all the better for it. Kindergarten’s appearance in the James Hazlett Gold Cup caused great interest, besides being responsible for the field being reduced to four runners. The champion was given a great reception, although he. was not by any means extended to. win. After the race Kindergarten was slightly sore again, but his trainer, L. J. Ellis, stated that he was no worse than after his race at Trentham.

The" only Southland winner was Loyal Lady, who beat the two-year-olds in the Hopeful Stakes in decisive style. She had been placed in her only two previous starts; and her win today was well merited. Inscrutable was only narrowly beaten in the Flying Fortress Handicap, but the majority of other Santhland candidates were unable to handle the going. Results: — OWIIIKO HURDLES, £3OO.
