OBITUARY

MR J. C. PATERSON

Mr J. C. Paterson, whose death has occurred at Gore, was one bestknown farmers in northern Southland. He had taken a leading part in activities in the Wendonside district, where he had lived for a number of years. Born in 1880, he was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Paterson, of Balclutha. He was educated at the Kaihiku school. Before he went to Wendonside, he lived for some time m the Clinton and Waipahi districts. A foundation member of the Wendonside Tennis Club and later president of the Northern District Lawn Tennis Association, he was also chairman of the Wendonside branch of the Farmers Union, a position he held for 25 years, a member of the Gore A. and P. Association, and from 1932 until his death the Crown tenants’ representative on the Southland Land Board, associating himself with efforts for improving the conditions of leaseholders. Mr Paterson was also a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Order. He was a foundation member of Lodge Switzers. He married in 1912 Miss Elizabeth Wade, who died four months ago. The members of the family who survive him are Messrs D. and M. Paterson and Miss Ismay Paterson (Wendonside), and Mrs J. Tanner (Te Puke). He is also survived by a sister (Mrs Grigor), who is living in the United States, and four grandchildren.
