ROUND-UP OF DUTCH CATTLE
FARMERS RECLAIM STOCK LONDON, December 11. “Netherlands farmers are joyfully participating in the biggest cattle round-up ever known in Europe,” reported Ronald Monson, Reuter’s war correspondent with the British 2nd Army in Germany, in a dispatch sent from near Geilenkirchen. “While from inside the border Netherlands women and children watched the great battle against the Germans, Netherlands men assisted troops in controlling and corralling the enormous number of cattle left behind by the fleeing civilians in the battle zone. “Most of the cattle had come from Holland, where they had been stolen, and Allied authorities lost no time in arranging for these herds to be collected and restarted. Never before in Europe have I seen such vast herds of lowing cattle as were gathered here yesterday. The fields for miles around were packed with them and more kept coming in. There were fine sheep and pigs, too. Some of the loot is coming back at last.”
