Sporting FORFEITS FOR CLASSICS

Overhaul Needed For Southland Events By HAMPTON. An overhaul in the method of forfeits for Southland trotting classic races is badly needed. For the 1947 Wyndham Juvenile Stakes a forfeit of £1 is due in September 1945, a £2 forfeit in September, 1946, and a final forfeit of £3 on general nomination day for the 1947 meeting. Thus to start a three-year-old in this classic costs £6, while the starter has to be nominated as a yearling. The same position applies in the Winton Juvenile Stakes. To start a horse in this event —entries are taken as £5 for a £250 stake, whereas to start a horse in the Winton Cup, a £4OO race, also costs £5, nominations for the Cup race being taken a fortnight before the meeting. A yearling may be entered for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, £l2OO, and it remains in for the original entry fee of £1 until a fortnight before the race is run. There is no reason why the Wyndham and Winton Clubs could not operate on the same system as the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club does with the Derby Stakes. It would certainly be appreciated by owners and breeders, as the two classics of these clubs are proving more costly than the stake money warrants. Dunedin Weights Handicaps for, the Dunedin meeting are due tomorrow.

Psalm’s Earnings Psalm’s three starts, for two firsts and a second, have been .worth £Bl5.

Named The Nelson Pointer—Arion Lou gelding engaged in the Winton Juvenile Stakes has been named Premier Pointer.

Holiday Stake Money The sum of £9980 will be distributed in stakes between the Gore, Winton, Southland and Wyndham Clubs during the holidays. Lord Advocate

Lord Advocate, who is to race on the southern holiday circuit, has created a good impression by his recent work at Riccarton.

High Praise . The Invercargill apprentice, B. b. Wilson, who won on Signal Officer and First In at Riccarton, has come-in for high praise from northern writers.

Jack o’ Lantern In the nominations for the Southland meeting in the Avenal Hurdles the name of Jack o’ Lantern should have appeared in place of Jack o London.

Well Represented Three Southland-bred pacers—Lady Dawn, Worthy Cross and Sea Bornhave been' nominated for this years Auckland Troting Cup of £2OOO.

An Attraction The appearance of Kindergarten at Wingatui will be quite an attraction, besides having a bearing on the size of the Hazlett Gold Cup field.

Favourites Amorlad, an expensive failure in last year’s Dunedin Cup, is one of the early favourites for this year’s race. Bonny Flight promises to be the early favourite for the Publicans’ Handicap. Glamour Girl Glamour Girl, who is a regular worker in A. McLellan’s Invercargill team, is an aged mare by Quite Sure from Bell Norris, a Lee Norris mare from Flowerbell, who was a daughter of Bellflower. Sons of Beau Pere Two of Beau Pere’s sons, Beaulivre and Beau Repaire will be represented by yearlings at the National Sales next month. Beaulivre’s oldest progeny are yearlings. On Small Side Stewardess, a three-year-old filly by Man’s Pal from the Iliad mare My Ship, may start racing at Waikouaiti, She is trained bj- C. G. Humphries for Mr J. T. Spears, the owner of Kaitoa, but lack of size will be against her. A Newcomer

The Nightmarch filly nominated for the Southland meeting is a member of H. Nurse’s team. She is out of Sweet Beauty, the dam of Cotingham, Rebel Star, Palmyra, Treasurer and Lord Advocate.

Same Programme Lord Chancellor had his final race trial before winning the Auckland Cup last year in the Te Awamutu Cup, which he won under 9st 131 b after running the 10 furlongs in the track record time of 2min 3sec. He has lOst 31b in the Te Awamutu Cup this year and even under that weight will be in the favourite division.

Big Fields Assured Although the field for the Publicans’ Handicap is somewhat disappointing, the Dunedin Cup has filled well, among those engaged being seven horses who competed in the New Zealand Cup, including the winner, Kevin. The nominations for both the Cup and summer meetings run to very substantial proportions, and big fields are assured.

Bend Or Line The famous Bend Or line, which has been dominant in English racing for more than 50 years, is again unchallenged this season in the winning sires’ list in England. The dominant branch of the line for the season is that of Phalaris through his sons Fairway and Pharos, and their sons, Nearco, Fair Trial and Blue Peter, whose son, Ocean Swell, won the Derby. These five sires fill five of the first six places, old Fairway, now nearly 20 years old, heading the list. Second place goes to Lord Derby’s other sire Hyperion. Fairway and Hyperion sired most winners —3l each—and their' progeny won most stake-money for the season.- The Hampton line, represented by Hyperion and Solario and Solario’s son Dastur, is still the nearest rival of the Bend Or line. Solario, rising 23, is ninth on the list. One of his daughters is the dam of Tehran, winner of the St. Leger.

BOXING

VIC CALTAUX’S NEXT FIGHT (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 14. Vic Caltaux’s next fight will be at Melbourne, probably against Jackie Daniels. The New Zealander’s two losing fights against Vic Patrick and Tommy Burns have brought him about £BOO. Though plucky, his displays against these class opponents have been of poor calibre.
