Mr Robert Cecil Silver, M.A. (Glasgow), senior lecturer in French Language and Literature in the University of Glasgow, has been appointed to the Chair of Modem Languages at the University of Otago in succession to the late Professor G. E. Thompson. He is aged 44 and has studied and lectured in both Glasgow and Paris. (P.A.) The appointment of Mr R. Gordon, house steward at the Otago Hospital, as house manager at the Southland Hospital, his duties to begin on January 10, has been approved according to information submitted to the meeting of the Hospital Board at Riverton yesterday.
Commander Gordon Bridson, D. 5.0., D.S.C., R.N.Z.N.V.R., has been, appointed honorary naval aide-de-camp to the Governor-General, in place of Commander T. S. Critchley, R.N.Z.N., according to a Gazette notice published last night.—(P.A.) The death of Mr Roderick McKenzie, a life member of the society, was mentioned by the president, Mr J. Robertson, at a meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society last evening. A motion of sympathy with the relations was carried. Guests at the Grand Hotel include Mr J. Glasgow (Christchurch), and Mrs A. F. Speight (Redcliff).
