ST. JOHN’S GIRLS’ SCHOOL

BREAK-UP CEREMONY The break-up ceremony of St. John’s Girls’ School, held at the school yesterday, was attended by a large number of parents, friends and old pupils. The pupils presented an entertainment consisting of songs, recitations, dancing and drill. The prizes were presented by Mrs J. A. Lush.

The school had had a very successful year in spite of some difficulties arising from the war, said Dr J. A. Pottinger, the chairman of the school board. The school was essentially a community affair. The board kept an eye on the finances, but no one knew better than the members how important was the help of the parents and of the whole community. At a time when everything was so regimented, a school like theirs could be a real asset to the community. With an enthusiastic staff, free from interference, such a school could develop its own trends and produce original and progressive ideas. Reviewing the work of the school during the year, the principal (Miss E. Nicholson) said that it had been a happy and successful one. ‘‘Some children are scholars, but not all. Some are artistic, some have business or organizing ability and others are athletic,” she said. “In a school of this size it should be possible to develop the varied gifts of the individual by joint school activities, in which every child, however young, could take a part and find her place in the community.” The prize-list is as follows:—
