WYNDHAM NEWS

PATRIOTIC QUOTA Appreciation of the manner in which the Wyndham Patriotic Zone was subscribing funds to provide comforts for the men overseas was expressed by Mr L. Harper, chairman of the Wyndham committee, at a meeting. The target for the zone was £1530, said Mr Harper, and'it was pleasing to announce that this sum had been exceeded by £462/11/6. The subscriptions from the areas making up the zone were as follows:—Wyndham (which includes Redan and Mokoreta), £BBO/3/9; Edendale, £371/15/2; Mataura Island, £lO2 7/-; Seaward Downs, £139/7/-; South Wyndham-Glenham, £199/19/-; income other than zone collections, £228 19/8; total, £1992/11/6. Meeting Of Tennis Club After being in recess for a year because of the lack of tennis balls, the Wyndham Tennis Club will be in active operation this year, and judging by the attendance at the annual meeting, the prospects for the season are promising. Mr C. G. Davey presided in the absence of the president, Dr J. H. Baird, and said that although there would again be no inter-club matches it was hoped to have home-and-home matches with Edendale. The following officials were elected:—President, Dr J. H. Baird; vice-presidents, Messrs S. Rice and C. E. Davey; secretary, Miss A. Pauli; committee, Messrs C. G. Davey and W. L. Stewart; captain, Dr J. H. Baird; ladder committee, captain, secretary and Miss T. Harper; delegates to Eastern District Sub-Association, president and Mr C. G. Davey. It was decided, because of the high cost of balls, that the club would subsidize the cost by 2/6 a pair. ANGLlNG.— Although conditions were anything but promising for the Wyndham Angling Club’s second competition, some exceptionally fine baskets were seen when seven competitors weighed-in 65 trout totalling 1121 b 4oz. The winner was D. Fraser, Edendale, who had a fine basket of 26 fish, weighing 431 b 12oz, from the Mataura. Those who weighed-in were:—D. Fraser, 26 fish, 431 b 12oz, 20 p.c. on, 1; W. Lewis, 10 fish, 161 b 6oz, 40 p.c. on, 2; H. Heath, 8 fish, 151 b 2oz, 10 p.c. on, 3; R. K. Bain, 9 fish, 151 b soz, scr; B. Leitch, 4 fish, 111 b, 10 p.c. on; S. Shanks, 5 fish, 71b soz, 25 p.c. on; F. Anderson, 3 fish, 31b 2oz, 40 p.c. on. A boys’ competition was also held for prizes presented by Mr M. Farrington, the results being as follows:—lan McDonald (3 fish) 1, Ray Johnston (2 fish) 2, Keith Peterson (1 fish) 3. R.S.A. PROPOSAL.— For some time the erection of club rooms has been considered by the Wyndham R.S.A. At a largely attended meeting of the branch it was decided that the meeting favoured the erection of club rooms as a memorial to those who had been killed and had served in the present war. Mr G. F. Mcßae, who presided, stated that the idea was to get the proposal started before the war ended. In outlining the scheme, Mi’ R. McCaughan said the time was not far distant when the public would be considering the erection of memorials, and the R.S.A. would be expected to take a leading part in any move that was made in this direction. They already had two sections backing one another—given to them, and running through from Balaclava street to Nightingale street, and his idea was to erect the club rooms at the rear of these sections with a lawn and decorative garden facing Balaclava street, where a decorative fence would be erected with a memorial archway on which the names of the soldiers would be engraved. To carry out this proposal they would need the backing of the public, but once they had anything concrete to put before them he felt sure they would get their wholehearted support. A strong committee, representative of the various districts associated with the branch, was formed, and this committee will meet at an early date to consider the scheme, after which a public meeting will be convened.

R.S.A.— At the monthly meeting of the Wyndham branch of the R.S.A. the president, Mr G. F. Mcßae, presided over a large attendance of members. The Rev. L. D. C. Groves, who represents the branch on the Wyndham Patriotic Committee, reported that at a recent meeting it was reported that the After Care Fund was in a healthy state. Saturday, January 28, was fixed as the date for the annual sports on the Wyndham racecourse, and a strong committee was elected to make all necessary arrangements for the function. One honorary member and four new members from the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force were elected. The number of members from the 2nd N.Z.E.F. now stands at 32.

GIRL GUIDES.— The need for a new Guide leader to take control of the Wyndham Company was emphasized at a meeting of the committee of the Wyndham Girl Guides. The president, Mrs H. Hunter, said that arrangements had been made to carry the company on till the end of the year, but after that the company would again be without a leader, and she appealed to anyone who could do so to step forward and fill the breach, as the company was in a particularly healthy state at present and it would be a pity to see it lapse for want of a leader. It was decided to close the year with a tea in the Murihiku Hall on Monday, December 4, to which all Guides, Brownies and parents would be invited. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB.— At the monthly meeting of the Wyndham branch of the Young Farmers’ Club, Mr I. McDonald presided over a good attendance of members. Mr W. L. Stewart gave an address, illustrated by a strip projector, on soil erosion in New Zealand. On the motion of Mr T. M. Thwaites, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Stewart for his address.
