SUCCESSFUL DAY FOR R. WILSON

CANTERBURY CUP AND MEMBER’S HANDICAP (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 3. The Canterbury Jockey Club had a bad ending for the concluding day of its meeting. Rain set in overnight and showers continued till well on in the day. The track was slow and the attendance was affected. In spite of the conditions, however, the meeting was a great success. R. Wilson’s Riccarton stable, which provided the Cup and Derby winners on the first day, was again prominent, taking the Canterbury Cup and the Members’ Handicap. The second maiden race was easy for Miss Myra, who was one of the leaders all the way, while over the final furlong she easily stalled off Desert Strife, who was not prominent early. Fiery Knight led to the straight and then retired. Prize Ring, Red Prize, Bay Robe, Lord Broiefort and Solver were the early leaders in the Suburban Handicap, but Solver started to drift before the straight was reached. Foxchase, though outpaced in the first half-mile, set out from the six furlong post to bridge the long gap. He was handy to the four leaders at the entrance to the straight and took the lead at the distance to win as he liked. Prize Ring just took second place from Red Prize, who had led to the straight. Bay Robe and Lord Broiefort were several lengths back. Alpine never recovered from getting off badly. KINDERGARTEN WITHDRAWN Kindergarten and Golden Souvenir were withdrawn from the Canterbury Cup because of soreness, while Piccolo was reserved for the Members’ Handicap. Pensacola took charge at the start and soon opened up a gap of three lengths. Trench Law, All Night and Glenfalloch were next along the back, but Glenfalloch dropped back about five furlongs from home, where Colais and Royal Lancer moved up to follow Pensacola to the straight. Glenfalloch then made a move, but though he took second place inside the distance he could not get near Pensacola, who won easily. Colais hung on to beat Royal Lancer by a head for third, while Rink headed the others without ever looking dangerous. Pensacola gained fresh admirers in an attrative performance. W. J. Broughton had to answer a charge that he had not ridden Glenfalloch on its merits, but his explanation was accepted. Signal Officer was responsible for an outstanding performance to win the Seymour Handicap. Listen In, Coronaire, Lex, Burberry and Rout led to the straight. Coronaire, Lex and Rout dropped out at the distance; where Silver Sal was making up ground, as was ' Signal Officer, who had been badly left at the start. Signal Officer finished with a great run, having the race won some distance from the post. Listen In held on for an easy second and Silver Sal cut the tiring Burberry out of third. Hormuz came on late to be fifth. Bridge Acre could not run in the Oaks, having developed leg trouble. Centime took the lead early. Ever Ready and Dark Diana following her for nearly a mile. Then they dropped out, leaving Lalla Meer, Miss Medley and Bonny Flight to follow the leader to the straight. Centime then retired, and a little further on Miss Medley ran past Lalla Meer to win easily. Bonny Flight was closing on Lalla Meer at the post, but was soundly beaten for second. Racket stayed on for fourth. My Bonnie, a hot favourite, was a long way back. Miss Medley had not won previously, but she has more prospects as she can stay. The Pioneer Handicap, for two-year-olds, was run in divisions. In the first Psalm, Essay and Nightstalk were always prominent and Psalm won decisively. Majestic was fourth. Loch Derg led the second division most of the way and won easily, with Gigli, Lord Coronach and Major Argosy following at intervals. TARA KING’S FAILURE Longsword was never far from the front in the Metropolitan Handicap, Night Lancer, Gamble, First In and Typhoon following him past the mile and three furlongs. Further on First In joined Longsword in the lead. Night Lancer and Gamble had retired, leaving Typhoon, Foxhaven, Langue d’Or, Tara King and Foxleap to follow the pair in front. There was not much between First In, Longsword, Typhoon and Langue d’Or at the distance. Langue d’Or and then Longsword weakened. First In was left with a slight advantage, but Typhoon drew level at the post. Longsword was three lengths back, with Foxhaven and Foxleap close up. Then came Langue d’Or after a gap, followed by the favourite Tara King, who never threatened danger. The Vulture, the favourite, soon took the lead in the Otaio Plate, but collapsed half a mile from home. Weld Cona and Night Robe were showing the way to Broiefield at the distance. Night ]

Robe staying on to beat Weld Cona by a neck, with Broiefield a moderate third, while BaiTage appeared late to be fourth. The first and second were Ellis horses, with E. J. Ellis and A. S. Ellis as the trainers, while L. J. Ellis and W. F. Ellis were the riders.

Royal Heir was soon in charge in the Members’ Handicap. Irish Note was prominent for two furlongs, where he shifted bacjc, leaving Sing Sing, High Play, Sister Sal and Flying Ace to follow the leader round the home turn, where Piccolo and Beau Cheval were moving up. Royal Heir, High Play and Sister Sal were in trouble at the distance, where Beau Cheval dashed to the front and he went on to win decisively from Flying Ace, who beat Sing Sing by a length. Irish Note came on with a strong late run to beat Piccolo for fourth. The favourite, Kaitoa, was never in the picture. Beau Cheval paid a big dividend after disappointing several times this season.
