Father C. Collins

The Rev. Father C. Collins, parish priest at Forbury Road Church, Dunedin, who died at Dunedin yesterday, was a son of the late Mr James Collins, a resident of Invercargill for many years. Father Collins was a professor at Holy Cross College for several years and was Administrator at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin, before he took over the parish at Forbury. As a young man he was an outstanding athlete. COLONEL ROBERT HUGHES (P.A.) WANGANUI, November 3. The death occurred today of Colonel Robert Hughes, a Maori War veteran and one who had a long association with the military life of Wanganui. He could rightly be described as the founder of the Wellington West Coast Regiment. He served originally with the Wanganui Volunteer Rifles and succeeded to the command of that body in 1909. In 1911, when the Defence Act became law, creating the territorials, Lieuten-ant-Colonel Hughes became the first commander of the 7th Wellington West Coast Regiment. He held that position until 1919, when he handed over the command to Colonel (now Major-Gen-eral) W. H. Cunningham, now of Wellington.
