Loudspeaker System

A loudspeaker system to announce the arrival and departure of trains and items of general information has been installed at the Invercargill railway station. At present experiments are being made to find the best position for coverage. The first occasion on which it was used was the arrival or the special troop train on Wednesday. H.M.N.Z.S. Gambia will arrive at Wellington this morning on her first visit to New Zealand. She is one of a class of 12 8000 ton cruisers named after British Crown colonies and is larger and more heavily armed than the ships of the Leander class. The Gambia which was recommissioned about 12 months ago by Captain N. J. W. William-Powlett and a crew composed of New Zealand and R'oyal Navy, personnel, has since seen much foreign service. (P.A.) Letters by Air Mail Letters from the north have been received in Invercargill for dispatch by the new air mail service beginning on Monday. An official at the local Post Office suggested yesterday that persona taking advantage of this service could aid the health camps by using health stamps on their letters. The postage required would be 4gd—3d for postage and ltd for. health. Letters could be handed in at the Post Office to ensure that they would be postmarked legibly to increase their philatelic value.
