Jury Favours Amendment (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 24. The view that there should be some amendment to the gaming laws was expressed in a presentment by file Grand Jury to Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court today. “It is abundantly clear from the convictions being made for bookmaking that the law is not being respected by the public generally,” added the foreman, Mx- S. S. Dean. He said the law shoixld either be tightened up or some amendment made.

The judge said he would see that the recommendation was brought to the proper authorities. He thought it was generally admitted that it did want some reconsideration at any rate.

BETTING IN HOTELS WARNING TO LICENSEES

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 24. Ilxe volume of illegal betting which was being carried on in hotel bars was causing the authorities concern, said Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson, in the Magistrate’s Court today, when five persons were fined a total of £175 for bookmaking. The Magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout, said the licensees had better be careful, or they would be losing their licences.
