Sporting TRING FANCIED AT WINGATUI

Dunedin Meeting Today Speculation in most of the events at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui today will cover a wide range. The fields are on the big side and many of the horses racing will be just getting into shape for spring racing. Investors will have the advantage, however, of having seen many of them in action at the Otago Hunt meeting last Saturday and in some of the races they will be guided by that form. The McLean Stakes, for two-year-olds, finds probably the best field ever to contest the race - on hand, and with so many likely-looking youngsters available it may not be easy to select the winner. Last week in the parade half-a-dozen or more shaped well and. they will probably dispute favouritism. Southlanders will rely on Psalm, Victory Flight, and perhaps Loyal Lady and Te Anau Lady, to repeat the performances of Winning Flight, Invulnerable and Lyndal, Southland-trained horses who have won the event in the last three years. In the Guineas, form has been disclosed to a certain extent, there being several winners in the field. Southland’s main hope is Bonny Flight, who won convincingly last Saturday and looks like carrying on the good work of the Francolin breed. Her greatest opposition will probably come from Air Ace and Piccolo, the two horses which finished within half a head of each other in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton. The Ranfurly Handicap has produced a fine field. Tring was a winner last Saturday and is certain to carry a lot of support and Sal’s Pal, Kevin and Sir Saladin may be expected to race well. There are nine events on the programme, but the first, a maiden event, will not be a “totalizator” race. WORK AT WINGATUI Majority Have Eight Tasks (Special) DUNEDIN, October 6. The majority of the horses on the tracks at Wingatui this morning were given light tasks. The course was covered with heavy dew and the going on the outside of the main track was inclined to lift a bit. Aurora Australis gave Sal’s Pal and St. Nattar two lengths start at the half-mile, but came along on the outside near the finish of the gallop to be just in front of Sal’s Pal, with St. Nattar, who had been in front halfway down the straight, close up. The time was 52 2-ssec. Aurora Australis finished with a lot in hand. Benbecula and Signal Officer shaped well over the same ground in 52 4-5. Trueway, going easily, recorded 56 l-ssec for the final four of eight furlongs. John Gay was not extended to run three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. The two-year-olds were again allowed to work on the rails. Western Front came home from two furlongs in 26 3-ssec. Eudora and Superlative, the former going smoothly in front, knocked off the fraction over the same ground. Princess Anne and Montezuma after a slow start, ran from the four to the two furlongs in 2545ec., and were then eased up and cantered down the straight. F. D. Jones and F. Roberts are on the scene with their teams. The former has brought Trueway, Pricess Anne and Montezuma, and the latter John Gay, Debater and Lalla Meer. Riders are: B. Langford, Plutocrat, Winning Flight, Arabian Night, Maharajah; W. F. Ellis, Psalm; K. Wilson, Royal Lancer. Crinkle will probably start in the Kaikorai Handicap in preference to the Telegraph Handicap. Superlative and Eudora and Montezuma and Princess Anne are coupled in the McLean Stakes. PACER GOLD FLIGHT DEAD (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 6. The death has occurred of the pacer Gold Flight, which was owned and trained by Mr D. G. Nyman, of Petone. He took ill at the weekend and died 24 hours later.
