BATTLE BETWEEN HORSES

KINDERGARTEN AND HALF-BROTHER

(P.A.) NAPIER, October 2. Believed to have been deliberately let out of their stables at • Greenmeadows, Kindergarten and his half-brother, Golden Souvenir, are suffering extensive injuries following a battle in the stable yard in the early hours yesterday morning. About 2.30 a.m. one of Mr E. N. Fitzgerald’s stable hands heard the noise of horses in the yard and found Kindergarten, Golden Souvenir and two mares, one of them Silver Coin, out of their boxes. The horses had been fighting and Golden Souvenir had received the worst of the battle, during which he was thrown over the railing fence. He was found wandering on the road in a groggy condition. Golden Souvenir was cut about the legs, neck and head. Kindergarten was gashed on the legs. Yesterday morning he was still showing signs of fight and when his trainer, J. Nicholson, took the jockey, J. Campbell, to see the horse, Kindergarten attacked his trainer, inflicting a gash on the face by biting. The gash required 11 stitches. Fortunately the injuries to the horses, though bad enough, will not terminate the racing career, of either, although Golden Souvenir is not expected to make the trip to Otaki or Masterton. A veterinary surgeon was called to minister to the wounds of both horses, the seriousness of which will not be known for a few days. On the assumption that the release of the horses was a deliberate attempt to interfere with them, the police are investigating.

GOLF

Championship Finals At Wyndham

The final of the Wyndham Golf Club’s A grade championship was played on Saturday, when P. B. Barnett defeated G. C. Davey 5 and 4. Although conditions were not good for low scoring both players produced golf of a high standard. At the end of the first nine holes the match was all square, but Barnett won the next two holes in bogey and was 2 up. The next two holes were halved in good figures and Davey won Boiling Pot in bogey. Barnett won Elbow, and Windmill was halved. A win at the short hole and a half at the last put Barnett 3 up after the morning round. In the afternoon both played well and Davey completed the first nine holes in 39—an excellent score considering the conditions. Barnett got into trouble at two holes, but otherwise his golf was sound and he maintained his lead of 3 up. Barnett won Clubhouse in par figures, to be 4 up. Davey won McDonald’s, but Barnett again increased his lead and won Slippery and Boiling Pot in bogey figures and the match 5 and 4. In the B grade final Hall beat Tangney 6 and 5. After the first round Hall was 5 up. In the afternoon he vzas in excellent form and at the end of 27 holes was 7 up. Tangney had a win at the Pit, but Hall took the next two holes in good figures.
