ERRONEOUS RETURNS OF SALES TAX

Fines Amount To £250

(P.A.) GREYMOUTH, October 2. Fines amounting to £250 were imposed on Thomas Neil Mouat on 10 charges of making erroneous returns of sales tax on timber sold during 10 months. The total involved £6BO and included a 10 per cent, penalty. Charges of intent to defraud were dismissed.

The defendant stated he thought the returns were being made by his agent and the omission was due to carelessness. There was no intention to defraud. The defendant operated two farms, a sawmill, an open-cast mine and a cartage business, having no time for clerical duties.

The Magistrate, Mr G. G. Chisholm, remarking on the incredible inefficiency of the defendant’s book-keeping, absolved the defendant of fraudulent intent. He fined the defandant £25 on each charge.
