PILOTLESS FLYING FORTRESS

(Rec. 9.10 p.m.) LONDON, October 1, Air Defence of Great Britain fighters on Saturday were ordered to intercept and destroy a Flying Fortress nearing Liverpool without a crew, but with a full bomb load, states the Air Ministry News Service. The Fortress got into difficulties over the Wash, causing the American crew to bale out The Fortress, through some mechanical freak, then levelled out and swung across country in the direction of Liverpool, apparently under the control of the automatic pilot. With bombs aboard it played tag with the fighters, passed over Liverpool, crossed Eire and headed but into the Atlantic where it presumably dived into the sea when its petrol was finished.
