POUNDING OF CITIES IN GERMANY

Heavy Attacks From Air

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, September 28. ■The Germans are taking the greatest air pounding they have ever had, says the aviation correspondent of the Press Association. Major air fleets, drawn from many thousands of Britain-based heavy bombers, day and night are laying waste the great cities immediately behind the German front. A force of more than a thousand escorted bombers participated in operations against Kassel, Merseburg and Magdeburg. A total of 49 bombers and 12 fighters are missing. British heavy bombers today thun-

dered across the Dover Straits for the fourth Allied major air operation within 24 hours. It is officially stated that later Lancasters and Halifaxes continued their offensive against Calais.
