NIJMEGEN SALIENT STRENGTHENED

ALLIES REACH MAAS ON WIDE FRONT GERMANS AT CALAIS SEEK TERMS (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec 11.15 p.m.) LONDON, September 29. Allied troops in Holland are continuing to strengthen both flanks of the Nijmegen salient, and advanced forces of Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey’s 2nd British Army, striking on the eastern flank of the salient, have reached the Maas on a 14mile front. Fierce German counter-attacks, especially at one poini, have been beaten off. Gains on the western flank are also reported. The bottleneck at Nechel, which up to the present has been a weak spot in the Nijmegen corridor, has now been broadened to a width of 18 miles, thus removing some of the danger to the main supply highway. German opposition to the north and west of the corridor is still strong. United Kingdom and Canadian troops have now t established a deep bridgehead over the Antwerp-Turn-hout canal and spearheads have pushed north against strong German resistance. Troops of Lieutenant-General Alexander M. Patch’s 7th American Army have made an attack in the region of the Belfort Gap. A fierce German counter-attack east of Nancy was driven back. The Canadians are continuing their pressure against the Channel port of Calais and the commander of the German garrison has asked the Canadians to consider- armistice terms. He was informed that the terms of the armistice were unconditional surrender and he was given until 10 o’clock this morning to make a decision. However, no word had been received from him at 11.30 and the assault is continuing: It is stated that the defenders of the town are squeezed into a small space and it is obvious that their days of resistance are numbered. Heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force have again been active over the city.
