ONE GOSPEL TRUTH SERIES. THE “very good” Adam and Eve were placed in Eden and were told not to eat of the forbidden tree under threat “in the day thou eatest thereof dying thou shalt die.” At some later stage a serpent “the most subtil beast of the field” appears on the scene and puts pleasing views of present advantage to them if they disobey and eat—even immortality and knowledge. The flesh yields and God’s word takes effect—mortality sets in. In God’s justice the serpent is punished. Note particularly that there is no mention of “a fallen angel” acting through the serpent. Had it been so surely the sentence was unjust (see 2 Cor. 11.3). ,
