BASKETBALL

EASTERN DRAWS WITH SOUTH OTAGO

Playing at Balclutha on Saturday, a senior representative Eastern Southland basketball team drew with South Otago, the scores being 13-all. A strong wind interfered with passing movements. Under the conditions the shooting reached a fairly high standard. The outstanding forward was E. Esplin, who met strong opposition. The play of the centres did not reach the standard reached in the match against Southland the previous week, but the Eastern team’s defence was sound and South Otago were forced to work hard for their goals. Play was generally marred by the amount of personal contact. A prominent Eastern player was S. Cameron, who passed the ball out successfully to the centre. The South Otago centres took advantage of Eastern’s high passes and intercepted well. One of the best forwards was M. Anglem. The team’s passing movements were superior to those of the Eastern team. The passes were shorter and smarter and harder to intercept. Although South Otago had the advantage of a 7-4 lead at halftime, the Eastern team overtook this lead in the second half and increased their score to draw level with thenopponents before the end of the game. The first junior match played this season between Eastern and South Otago resulted in a win for Eastern by 10 goals to 5. The high wind also made conditions difficult in this game and play was generally not up to standard. The score was one-all at half-time. Although there were many passing movements, neither team was able to finish them. The most impressive forward in the Eastern team was U. Forbes. I. McArthur, P. Ballantyne and M. Gordon, the three centres, gave sound exhibitions. E. Wallis in the defence also showed up by her interception work.
