POPULAR COMEDIES
J. C. Williamson Company
“Arsenic and Old Lace,” “Claudia” and “Kiss and Tell,” which are to be staged by J. C. Williamson’s brilliant comedy company at the Civic Theatre on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights next, are three of the best and most successful productions the Eng-lish-speaking stage has known for very many years, each of them being record breakers in England, America, Australia and New Zealand. “Arsenic and Old Lace” is about a pair of gentle aunts who have fallen, more or less by accident, into the quaint habit of poisoning friendless and lonely old gentlemen and concealing the left-over bodies in the cellar. “Claudia,” the second production to be staged next Tuesday night, is an intriguing and sophisticated comedy about a girl, her mother, and her very indulgent husband. The histrionic burden falls on Lloyd Lamble as David Naughton, the often worried but always lovable and protective husband, and the young _ New Zealand actress, Bettina Welch, in the title role of Claudia Naughton. Neva Carr Glyn is the glamorous and dynamic operatic star, Madame Daruschka, and she adorns the part with highly expressive character work. The final production “Kiss and Tell” created a furore of enthusiasm at its New Zealand premiere in Dunedin last week. ,
