ATTACK ON CRUISER TARANTO

Vessel Partially Submerged

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, September 24. Reuter’s correspondent at Allied headquarters says that reconnaissance photographs obtained today show thatthe old Italian cruiser Taranto, with which the Germans hoped to block Spezia Harbour, is partially submerged as a result of an attack by Mitchell bombers yesterday. The Mitchells sank an 8000-ton merchantman anchored beside the Taranto.

Heavy bombers and fighter bombers, following the fall of Rimini and Futa Pass, are pounding road bridges and railway targets in northern Italy to disrupt German traffic and- create confusion behind the lines.
