COMPULSORY STOP NOT FAVOURED
MOTORISTS AND SCHOOL BUSES
A remit from the Automobile Association (Southland) suggesting that the Transport Department be requested to introduce a regulation providing either that no driver shall pass a school bus which is loading or discharging children or that no driver shall exceed 10 miles an hour in such circumstances failed to find favour with the annual conference of the South Island Motor Union held in Christchurch on Friday. The president of the association, Mr S. C. K. Smith, who was one of the association’s delegates to the conference, said that the general opinion seemed to be that there were so many regulations and restrictions imposed on motorists now that it was a mistake to suggest an addition. It was also stated that the child safety campaign designed to impress on children the necessity for observing the rules of the road should prevent children from running heedlessly across a road to or from a bus. Another remit from the association suggesting that the union discuss the new right-hand rule and 1 the danger caused by the difficulty of seeing whether a driver on the right had signalled his intention to turn was adopted, Mr Smith said. The problem would be discussed after information on the practice in the Australian States had been obtained.
The third remit from the association requesting the Government for a more equitable distribution of petrol was also carried.
