Sergeant Hinton May Be Labour Candidate
It is possible that the Labour candidate for the Awarua by-election will be Sergeant J. D. Hinton, V.C., who is a prisoner of war in Germany. A member of the Awarua Labour Representation Committee said yesterday that it was a question whether Sergeant Hinton’s acceptance of nomination could be obtained in time. Before he went overseas Sergeant Hinton was a member of the Labour Party. It is stated that he has expressed a wish to enter politics. Any person qualified may, with his consent, be nominated as a candidate for election for any district „by no fewer than two electors of that district by nomination paper given to the returning officer not later than noon on the day appointed in the writ as the last day for the nomination of candidates. In this instance nominations will close on Wednesday, October 11. The consent of a candidate may be signified to the returning officer by letter, or by telegraph, which shall be deemed to be delivered in time if it is delivered at the telegraph office for transmission within the time stated; provided that the consent of any person who is for the time being outside New Zealand may be signified to the returning officer in any manner approved by the chief electoral officer.
