SCHOOLS OBSERVE ARBOR DAY
Ceremony At Queen’s Park
The Arbor Day ceremony which was postponed on Thursday afternoon was held at Queen’s Park yesterday morning, when children from the North, Middle and Waihopai schools were addressed by Mr J. Pickard, chairman of the Reserves Committee of the City Council, and Mr W. Stapleton, officer in charge of city reserves. First, Mr Stapleton gave a practical demonstration of the manner in which a tree should be planted, and then the children planted 200 English beech trees.
The beech trees were planted along the sides of the cyclists’ track running from Elies Road entrance down to the rotunda. In time these trees will grow to a height of from 70 to 80 feet. At present Italian poplars are growing alongside the track, but some of these may be removed to enable the full growth of the beech trees. The avenue later will prove a good shelter to cyclists and add to the beautification of the park.
