(Rec. 9.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 4, Despite the number taken during the current American opera- . tions in Dutch New Guinea, a marked tendency persists among Japanese troops in the area to choose a violent death rather than submit to captivity. At a forward United States hospital one Japanese committed suicide by swallowing a thermometer. The mercury and glass fragments soon caused death. Other captives have even removed bandages from their wounds in the hope of bleeding to death.
