APPEAL TO DAIRYMEN
Increased Production ' Wanted
A statement that the production of cheese at the Mataura dairy factory was down 70 tons at the end of April compared with last year was made by the secretary, Mr C. H. Hargest, yesterday. The figures were based on the production of the past few months. An appeal to suppliers to increase production has been made through a circular by the directors of the factory. The circular urges farmers to milk as many cows as possible next season, to refrain from disposing of calves which may be brought into production in the near future and to cull less heavily from existing herds. Farmers are also invited to persuade their neighbours who are not dairying to milk a few cows, thus helping to swell the volume of cheese manufactured in the Mataura district and assisting to feed Britain’s millions, who are living on the most meagre ration of butter and cheese.
“The opinion is very generally held that the prices paid for dairy products are inadequate and offer no inducement to dairymen to increase production, but such a view does not bear favourable comparison with the sacrifices of our airmen in the Battle of Britain, when there was no question of personal gain in the hour of need,” states the circular.
