RUSSIAN GRIP TIGHTENING
Strangle-Hold On Sebastopol
LONDON, May 7,
The Russian strangle-hold on Sebastopol is tightening, says a Moscow message. Strong formations of Russian bombers blasted troop concentrations, gun installations and ammunition dumps around the city. Shipping in the harbour was also attacked, some vessels being sunk. A Soviet communique says that the Germans suffered heavy losses in these raids. Muscovites are gleefully counting the number of “Dunkirk” evacuation ships trying to slip away from Sebastopol which the Red Air Force and Black Sea Fleet are destroying, says a British United Press correspondent.
Ninety enemy ships, totalling 115,000 tons, have been sunk since the Crimea offensive began. It is estimated that at' least an equal
number have been damaged. Reuter’s correspondent in Moscow reports a tremendous intensification in the past 48 hours in the attacks against German convoys. Several ships have been sunk in Sebastopol harbour itself and several escaping convoys dispersed. Red Air Force light bombers are at present specializing in smashing the powerful anti-aircraft defences around Sebastopol harbour.
