BOMBING ASSAULT ON HITLER’S EUROPE
SECOND DAYLIGHT RAID ON BERLIN BUCHAREST ATTACKED FOR THIRD TIME IN 24 HOURS
(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, May 8. Berlin has had two daylight raids by American heavy bombers in 24 hours, and Bucharest, the capital of Rumania, has been bombed three times in 24 hours—a daylight raid by the Americans and two night raids by the Royal Air Force. The raids on Bucharest were made by air forces based on the Mediterranean. A correspondent points out that Italy is proving invaluable to the Allies as an aircraft base.
A United States communique announces that very large forces of American heavy bombers raided Berlin and Brunswick today. It is thought probable that more than 750 bombers went out. They were escorted by a large force of fighters. Flying Fortresses bombed Berlin and Liberators struck at Brunswick. The Germans say that the raids were made in thick weather and that there were many air battles. While these raids were in progress American medium bombers were striking at military targets in France. These followed raids made last night by six separate forces of Royal Air Force heavy bombers on airfields and ammunition dumps in France. A strong force of Royal Air Force heavy bombers carried out the raid on Bucharest. They attacked the railway yards and oil refineries and factories working for the Germans. Large fires were left burning. One of the main purposes of these raids on Bucharest is to smash the network of railway lines radiating from the city. The Royal Air Force raid was made shortly after the daylight attack on Bucharest by American Liberators and Flying Fortresses.
