MEN’S HOCKEY

Civil Service Defeat Collegiate Senior games in the Southland men’s hockey competition were continued on Saturday at Queen’s Park. The weather was cold and overcast and the grounds were in fairly good condition. No junior games were played. Civil Service beat Collegiate by four goals to three in a fast and interesting game. The team were very evenly matched and the result of the game was always in doubt. The players took time to settle down and infringements were frequent in the early stages. During the greater part of the first half Collegiate were attacking, but the Civil Service defence was strong and they scored only once during the half. Pettigrew and Bedford scored for Civil Service, making the half-time scores two goals to one. The second half produced some bright and interesting play. Civil Service made repeated attacks against the Collegiate goal, but a lack of combination in the circle and some good play by Poole (goal-keeper) kept them from scoring on several occasions. Bedford, Pilling, Pettigrew, Shieffelbein and Geddes played well for Civil Service, and for Collegiate Mason, Stewart, Sinclair, Patton and Calvert played well. Goals were scored for Civil Service by Bedford (3) and Pettigrew and for Collegiate by Calvert (2) and Sinclair. The umpires were Messrs F. Hinton and C. J. Lythgoe. Central had a decisive win over High School by six goals to one. The game was reasonably even in the first half. Central attacked strongly, but they lost several almost certain goals through bad play in the circle. The score at half-time was two-nil in favour of Central. High School tired badly during the second half and were able to score only once. The Central forwards improved on their play in the first half and as a result the side was able to score four more goals without much difficulty. Scorers for Central were Fyffe (3), Gunn (2) and Hughes. Payne, Craig, Mulligan, Dixon and A. Bainbridge played well lor High School. For Central Fyffe, Gunn, Grenfield and Allen played well. Messrs A. E. Dakin and W. Curwen were the umpires.
