Sporting BIRCHWOOD HUNT COLLECTIONS
£5OO For Patriotic , Funds The Birchwood Hunt Club has not confined its activities to fostering the sport of hunting during the war. At the annual meeting pf the club this week it was revealed' that a sum ot £5OO had been collected at the various fixtures held by the club, all of which had been distributed to various patriotic bodies. Last season the collection of “hat moneys” for patriotic purposes totalled £lOO.
Southland Pacers Southland pacers and trotters form a big portion of the horses entered for the Forbury Park meeting next week. In one race alone, the Southland Handicap, there are no fewer than 11 pacers from Southland stables.
Absolutely .. . „ Absolutely, the Wyndham Cup winner, is off the front of a 3.28 -mile and a-half race at Forbury; so are Princess Maritza and Scotch Music. All three will be racing at Invercargill today. Sound Breeding Periwig, who paid nearly £5O when he won the two-year-old event at Riccarton on Saturday, is by Solicitor General from Scrip by Paper Money from Zia by Rokeby from Stepka. He was bred by his owner, Mr H. • N.. Spence, for whom he is trained by C. Emerson. Scrip was stinted to Battle Song in 1941, but had to be destroyed in 1942 before foaling.
Man’s Pal As A Sire The stock of Man’s Pal have been racing three seasons. Each consecutive season he has sired a classic two-year-old winner. Likewise in every consecutive season he has sired winners of important handicaps on each metropolitan course from Auckland to Dunedin, including the Auckland Champagne Stakes, Great Northern Foal Stakes, Wellington St. Leger,McLean Stakes and the Dunedin Champagne Stakes (2). His stock have won and been placed in many important handicaps-all over New Zealand. The Taranaki Cup, Dunedin Cup and New Plymouth Cup, together with the famous Australian .Cup, have been won by his progeny. This season the stock sired by him since he came to Southland made their first public appearance. Lyndal, a filly, won the McLean Stakes, and Joygiver, a colt, won the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, thus creating a record for their sire' without parallel in the history of the southern classic double. Among the two-year-olds his stock defeated were the progeny of all the- leading sires in the North Island. No horse in the breeding industry of Southland has up to the present done this. At the Autumn Wellington meeting where the best of the North Island met the best of the South Island Man’s Pal had three representatives racing in the big handicaps. Palora won the Railway Handicap, Corday (top weight) was narrowly beaten in the Thompson Handicap in record time and Palfrey was third in the Autumn Handicap (1J miles). — 9802.
A Likely Favourite After running second to Bulldozer at Manawatu and third to Safety Pin and Highland Scott at the Wellington meeting, Cabin Boy has been reassessed from 4min 36sec to 4min 35sec, and in the Wairarapa Handicap today he will have to concede 24 yards to the limit horses. His finishing run in his latest engagement suggests that he may run a great race in his next engagement. Safety Pin, who won from the limit mark, is now on 48 yards behind, and this handicap may prove too much for her. A prospect in this race is Sports Guide, who may be able to give the majority a start of 60 yards. He will be bracketed with Margin, whose most recent display against the pacers was full of promise. Mares In Stud Book
Included in the latest issue of the New Zealand Stud Book is a list of mares who on standard breeding would not be eligible for inclusion, but (says The Press) because they have produced a performer with a good record they find a place under a special section for non-standard-bred mares that have produced one performer in the 2min lOsec list. Included are Bicolour (dam of Uenuku, 2min 6 2 7 5 sec), Carol Nelson (Lady Carol, 2min 9 2-ssec), Fanny Huon (Braw Lass, 3min 14 l-ssec), Forward Lady (King’s Warrior, 4min 17 2-ssec), Gold Moko (Kenworthy, 4min 15 3-ssec), Home Lass (Shadow Maid, 2min 39 l-ssec), Illumination (Worthy Light, 4min 19sec), Lady Ayrmont (Ayrmont Chimes, 2min 41 2-5 sec), and Okoura (Ginger Jack, 2min 8 3-ssec). With the exception of Okoura, who also bred Regalare, 3min 34sec, not one of the mares has produced a performer with records worth mentioning outside the one that made them eligible for inclusion in the Stud Book.
