ARMY OF CIVILIAN WORKERS

(8.0.W.) RUGBY, April 27. In the Middle East over 240,000 civilian workers are employed by the British Army doing essential jobs which the forces would otherwise have to do themselves. Of these, 150,000 work in Egypt, while the remainder are spread over Palestine, Syria, Cyprus, Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, the Sudan, Eritrea and Malta. They include artisans, clerks, drivers, cooks, orderlies and general labourers. The biggest employers of labour in the Middle East are the two Army base workshops in Egypt which together now employ 16,000.
