Fighting Dies Down On Every Sector
LONDON, April 24. Fighting has died down on all sectors of the front, states the British United Press correspondent at Allied headquarters in Italy. Prisoners taken in the beach-head area, recently, were from a German infantry division which has beep on this front since early in February. One prisoner quoted General Greiner as saying: “ k We will not evacuate until what is left can get away in one lorry. There has been a marked falling oft in enemy activity along the upper .Garigliano. LANDING OPERATIONS AT ANZIO Only 243 Ships Used (Rec, 7 p.m.) LONDON, April 24. It is revealed that only 243 ships, including landing craft, participated in the landing operations at Anzio, compared with 2000 ships used for the landing in Sicily, says Reuter’s correspondent at Allied Headquarters m Italy. . Warships have carried . out many bombardments in the Anzio area since the landing. The British cruisers Penelope and Spartan and the destroyers Laforey and Janus were among the ships lost in connection with the operation. The Spartan caught fire after being bombed and her magazine exploded. The Janus, which was dive-bombed, sank within 22 minutes. The Laforey before sinking fired 2000 rounds against beach-head positions.
