LESSENED MENACE OF U-BOATS

(8.0.W.) . RUGBY, April 24. The Germans are now losing a ratio of more than one U-boat for every merchant vessel they sink, said Admiral Francis A. Low, Chief of Staff of the United States 10th Fleet, speaking in Washington. He added: “We are now in a better position regarding the German Üboat menace than at any time since the outbreak of the war. U-boats today are sinking considerably less than half of one per cent, of the ships being convoyed across the Atlantic.” Admiral Low said it was believed it took the Germans two or three times as long to build a submarine as that vessel might, on-the average, be expected to endure on combat patrols. During 1943 and 1944 the Allies built more than 100 carriers of all types and over 600 destroyers and escort vessels.
